Arts and Archery 2019 – Feb 17

Sunday, February 17, 2019

The Barony of Lyondemere is proud to host their annual tournament to choose Their Excellencies’ new champions of Archery and Arts & Sciences at Lyondemere Arts and Archery on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at Rancho Park Archery Range. All are welcome to participate in a fine day of archery, competition, and sharing of artistic endeavors.

Because we are a seafaring land, our themed shoots and activities will be centered around what else, the sea! Artists who desire to compete for our championship will be awarded extra points for providing objects related to the theme.

Throughout the day there will also be fun, hands-on arts demos.

ARCHERS

Shoot till you drop! (Then shoot a little bit more.)

We’ll have fun with novelty shoots, which you can shoot as much as you want, with only your highest score counting. There will be sic different shoots going throughout the day, including some terrible monsters to shoot, as well as our current champion’s favorite seasonal (can you beat her highest score?). We’ll be using the 10m, 18m, and portable targets for variable distances on the 50m ranges.

There will be a special art shoot starting after lunch. To qualify, either the archer or their consort* must enter an art or science entry in a special art competition (*your consort may be your partner, a friend, sibling, an artist/scientist that you admire, or one you just met and decided to team up with).

Once the tournament ends, DON’T pack up yet! While the final scores are being tallied, come to the 18m range for the return of the beloved balloon melee! Every archer will get a balloon to pin to the target wall, representing their life on the melee field. Try to take out as many other archers balloon until someone gets yours. Who will be the last archer standing?

The finals will be a modified forester round, on a novelty target. The Baron has challenged our current champion to come up with something really difficult, will you be up for the challenge?

ARTISANS

We will have a few options for you to show off your newest object d’art (and/or science)!

To enter Baronial Championship you will need one period object (any type, from functional to non, any period medium) and provide written documentation. Please send a brief description of your entries for arts champion, by January 15, to our minister of arts so she can arrange suitable judges for your work to the following email address: artsnscience@lyondemere.org. This is a great opportunity for those wanting feedback on their projects for Pentathlon to assist in honing your entries.

All ages welcome (there will be a youth category, judged separately). The Lyondemere Art and Science Champion is judged on a recent, completed in the past year (2018-2019) project, and is expected to be fully documented. Because the judging is to be “’blind” please do NOT put names or any other identifying marks on entries or documentation. Entrants will be given a number to identify their entry at List.

Archer/Consort Art championship — anyone vying for the archery baronial championship, and provides an art or science project (either from the archer or their consort), will be placed into a special shoot and their submission will be eligible to win a prize. These entries will be chosen by their Excellencies and all objects need to come in with no identifying marks on the item or documentation (if provided).

There will also be a People’s Choice Arts Competition for those who wish to display their skill, but do not have proper documentation, or do not wish to enter in the championship competition.

A donation breakfast and lunch will be available. Further details to be posted closer to the event.

Cast Iron Chef Sunday, August 12, 2018

Sunday, August 12, 2018

Greetings Caid! Once again it’s time for the exciting annual competition, Cast Iron Chef Lyondemere where, at this event, up to four teams will compete to see whose medieval meal reigns supreme and which head chef will win the esteemed title of “Cast Iron Chef 2018.”

Huzzah! We will not be charging a site fee for this year’s event. As per usual, for those folks who are not cooking, the day will be filled with activities, games, demos, and the kitchen tours, of course, where you can interact and ask questions of the cooks. We will again have the popular, “Eat with the judge’s raffle,” and so much more fun! The proceeds for this year’s raffle will be donated to charity, to help those affected by Cancer. More details will be released as we get closer to the event. Again, there will be a donation lunch served. More info on this will follow later.

Location

West Grove Park
5372 Cerulean Ave, Garden Grove, CA 92845
Cross Streets: Near the intersection of Cerulean Ave and Casper St
Off of the 405 and 22 Fwys

For you interested in competing, registration is now open (June 27) and will close either when all spots are full or July 27, whichever comes first. Here is our scenario:

It’s the early 1500’s on the Isle of Islay, Scotland. Here is where we find our heroine. A lovely lass with dark hair, a song in her heart, and a feisty tongue. Brave and courageous she is, with talents to match the best of men. Known for her fierceness and loyalty, from a young age, she was a force to be reckoned with. Although she was born the daughter of a nobleman, she strove to have her own way and build the life she wished. As a young lass, she could often be found learning how to fight with a sword from those who would teach her. As she grew, she could drink in the local tavern and gamble with the men, all while earning the respect of the town. By the time that she was past what would be considered “the marrying age,” she was a woman beyond compare. Still, wanting to please her family, she married, after finding a man who would accept her as she was. They were well suited and blessed with each other. While still keeping her manor home, she also runs a inn and gambling parlor. This is where we find her now. A large group of travelers have arrived seeking hospitality and she is happy to oblige. She will cook them a meal like they have never seen and then take them for all they have at the gambling tables after they have stuffed themselves. But wait, she has overheard a few of them whispering in the corner about plans against King James V. She then hears the voice of her beloved seanmathair, telling her from the great beyond, “Wee bairn, dinnae lit dese blengenges gie th’ best ay ye.” She was raised primarily by this strong woman, whose family had originated in Germany. This is where she got her tenacious spirit and her talent for cooking. With the memory of her grandmother in her mind, she vows that she will use all her talents to be sure that these scoundrels will not succeed in their devious plan.

Now will you take up the challenge and be her team of cooks?

Each team can have up to four members, with one named as Head Chef. There is a $20 entry fee per team which goes towards the cost of the food given to you to prepare. There will be a minimum of three dishes but no more than five dishes to be accepted for judging.

If you wish to compete for the title of Cast Iron Chef, please contact us at castironchef@lyondemere.org between June 27 and July 27, or until the team slots are all reserved (maximum of four teams).

DEMO: basic period frytors

This year, one of last years winners will be holding a hands on class/demo on basic period frytors. Yumm, come be a part of it. Thank you to THL Tomaso da Barbiano.

Additional Baubling Competition

We will be adding a new twist to the cooking competition this year. Each team will be able to add an additional person to their team to compete in a baubling game run by Lord Wulfric Forlong Falconhurst. At the end of the game, each team will be able to add a point to the team score with every bauble that they walk away with. Baubles will be provided.

Lyondemere Anniversary – July 21, 2018

The Barony of Lyondemere invites one and all to celebrate its 40th Birthday!

Yes, we’re turning 40 and we’re having a party! Come enjoy the cool breezes as our guest in the barony by the sea. Everyone is invited! We’ll have food, games, prizes, and of course a TOURNAMENT!

Harken back to the days of Lyondemere of old with fun and games from “the olden days.” We’ll have a flat cap toss, poetry and posies, the ever-popular “Inferno Tourney,” and a guess-that-heraldry contest.

There will be lists in armored and rapier combat to determine the baronial champions. Specific format will be decided on the number of entrants. A Champion is the Baronial representative to the martial community; prospective champions should be prepared to answer questions, respond to challenges, and likewise represent their martial art to the Baron and Baroness. Lyondemere champions are given an honorary position on the Baronial retinue and their Lyondemere gate fees are covered for the length of their service. Please consider these responsibilities and privileges when making your decision to enter the list, especially if you are already the champion of another barony.

Lunch will be provided free of charge to everyone in attendance!

Lyondemere Anniversary wouldn’t be complete without our Basket Drawing fundraiser. There will be many beautiful items, most of them handmade by our talented artisans, on which to use your tickets. And since there is no registration fee and we’re providing lunch, we hope you’ll be generous with your ticket purchases! Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. We are grateful for your participation in our annual fundraiser.

Lyon Bard

The Lyon Bard position was created to encourage excellence in historical performance arts and in original compositions done in an historical manner. The competition is open to singers, poets, storytellers, actor-playwrights, and musicians. The primary responsibilities as Lyon Bard include: to take their place in Their Excellencies’ court and to perform at the required events, to encourage new bards and bardic activity in the barony as well as the kingdom, and/or to compose new material at the request of Their Excellencies (possibly in honor of or in praise of the Kingdom, Her Monarchs, The Barony, and other praiseworthy topics). The champion’s deeds must reflect honor, the talent and knowledge of which they have earned their position should be used for the greater glory of the Barony of Lyondemere and the encouragement of their art.

For this year’s competition, come prepared to perform one piece of your choice. Documentation is not required but may earn bonus points. Lyrics/words should be included wherever applicable. The piece may not exceed 10 minutes.

This honor is for a single person, not a group, though one may perform with backup musicians or singers. The holder of the title may not be their own successor. If the Lyon Bard is unable to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, then the position will go to the first runner-up, at the discretion of the Baronage.
